A Terrible Fear in Group Fitness – by Ed

Imagine a nice Sunday afternoon: Got a great lunch with friends and family, watched some television and now it’s about that time of the day when you go to the gym for your favorite fitness class of the week. This really tops off the day because you see all the regulars and catch-up on their lives and what’s been happening within your community. Then something terrible happens… there’s a substitute instructor! Nooooooo! Good heavens… what will this instructor do, how can it be as good as  usual, should I leave (wait no one else is, I better stay)???

This has happened at least once to everyone who has a favorite class. The fear of the unknown and something different just doesn’t sit well with us humans; certainly not when we come to THAT class just for THAT instructor. What was our instructor thinking being sick; s/he must know we need him/her here for THIS class?

What I have learned from this situation? Embrace the change! There is nothing that can be done about your instructor being gone; you are already there, so get a great workout in. Maybe this instructor does things differently than what you are use to; well heck, embrace that and get sore in different places for once. If you are really lucky, perhaps this instructor kicks butt and you now want to go try some of his/her classes.

As Fall gets on a roll, holidays pop up, kids get sick and exams suck; all of these add tons of stress to our lives. Don’t let the dreaded substitute instructor cause any more. Throw your hands up, and say “Oh, what the heck, let’s try something new!”
